Meet The Team CC7s Edition: Joanne (Nana) Fa'Avesi

Nana joined the Stars for our Calgary Stampede 7s tour after submitting her player nomination alongside some spectacular game film. What stood out about Nana was her quickness and keen decision making. Her versatility with the ability to play anywhere from scrumhalf to fullback on the XVs pitch solidified her spot on the team.

I had the chance meet Nana in person and see her skills live when her Sacramento Amazons team played for the USA Rugby D2 National Championship in Madison, WI in June. They fell just short of upsetting defending champions (and Star Rebecca Trapp's team) the Pittsburgh Angels but in the process of the 36-26 loss had what was the closest and most exciting game on the day.

Nana excelled on the field for us in Canada in July and earned a week at the Olympic Training Center at Chula Vista as a result; she is currently back at the OTC with the USA Women's 7s program for another week with Eagles coach Ric Suggitt. The Amazons team also scored a huge upset this summer in beating then USA Rugby Club 7s National Champions (and Stars Jessica Turner's current team/Cynthia Wright's former team) the Berkeley All Blues in their final NorCal qualifier to make it to Seattle for the 7s National Championships. It has been fantastic watching her progress as a player and embracing all the opportunities before her since those first game clips in March.

Nana has been a huge asset for our program off the field as well. She brought her fantastic sister Mary to our team - who had to decline her invite to Australia as she is 6 months away from adding another Star to our family! - as well as another Amazon teammate Leka. She introduced Jojo to our men's side, brought in Pasifika Strength & Conditioning as a sponsor/partner, and continues to recruit for the program and represent us well. Nana is our youngest women's player and has a huge future ahead of her as she continues to commit and train for the game of rugby 7s!

Here's Nana's story in her words:

Hi my name is Joanne Fa'avesi better known as Nana! I am 22 years old and I am Tongan, Samoan and German. I started playing rugby when I was a Freshman in High School at Luther Burbank High School. I became a part of the Sacramento Amazons HS side in 2006. After my very first practice I fell in love and never looked back.

Since then I have played for multiple teams including the Sacramento Amazons, Berkeley All Blues and the USA U20 National Team. I love this game because it understands me. When I am playing nothing else matters but that moment. Rugby has done a lot for me and I can honestly say rugby has changed my life in tremendous ways. It has played an important role in who I am today. I am a better person today then I was before both on and off the field.

Playing higher level rugby didn't seem possible for me after HS level. Doors opened to me that changed my route and all I want to do is play higher level rugby because it will help improve my game. In rugby there is always something I can improve on and always something new to learn. My experience with the Stars to Canada was beyond what I expected. I had a great time and learned that the next level is another kind of beast that I must learn how to handle. So I will take what I learned from that tour into this next tour to Australia!

I am sure that the Central Coast 7s will be nothing short of amazing! Looking at the teams that are to attend reassures me that I will have the time of my life. All I can do is prepare and ball out. I would not have made it this far without God, my Family and my Support System! I am a God-fearing Polynesian woman that loves to play rugby!!

Meet The Team CC7s Edition: Jojo Tikoisuva

"BEAT NEW ZEALAND" became something of a battle cry at the American Pro Rugby Training Center back in August. The camp hosted by former Eagles Women's 7s Coach Julie McCoy featured players ranging from age 16 to age 30 to train for five days in a high performance environment. The older players brought veteran leadership and experience as Club 7s National Champions, as attendees of other elite camps, as members of various touring sides. The younger players brought possibility and potential.

Jojo came recommended to the Stars from fellow Sacramento native Nana when we were seeking player nominations for our Calgary Stampede 7s tour. He had to decline the invite as he was soon leaving for Argentina with the High School All Americans and had another trip to follow to China for the Youth Olympic Games. Jojo reached out regarding the Australia tour the same week as a roster spot opened and, given his strong resume - playing for All American Coach Salty Thompson is a great start for any young rugby player's career - we extended the invite. Jojo will be the youngest player on our tour and with his age and experience, he embodies the profile of the players needed for the USA to one day beat New Zealand.

This tour will provide the opportunity for Jojo to progress from the age grade level of competition to men's elite 7s, to train and receive mentorship from the players in our program that have spent time as senior all-stars and have trained at Eagles 7s camps. The guidance from the coaches, again with international experience evaluating and developing talent, will give Jojo the feedback and assistance in goal-setting and future programming to reach the next level. Some may look at an 18 year old player as too rookie, too raw, too young for a tour of this nature; we look at him and see potential that deserves to be developed. If we can test him now and he can experience senior level international 7s, he can produce for his club and his country for years to come.

Here's Jojo's story:

Hi my name is Joeli Tikoisuva and I also go by Jojo. I am 18 years old and love playing rugby. Rugby has always been a big part of my life. My family is very rugby oriented we would go to the USA Sevens tournaments every year since it was hosted in LA 2002 through the 2014 Vegas Sevens.

Growing up and watching my older brother play club rugby in the Bay Area really pushed me to follow in his footsteps. I started playing touch rugby when I was 9 years old and stopped for a while. When I was in the 7th grade I started playing wing for the Sacramento Islanders High School Rugby Club in Sacramento, California. I played in many All Star games representing Sacramento, and Northern California.

2011 was one of the roughest years for me as on September 11th I lost some one that was very close to me, like a father figure to me. After his passing I pushed myself even more to improve in rugby because I know that is what he would've wanted. I was then selected to try out for the USA Rugby High School All Americans and made the team that traveled to England. I continued pushing myself because I wanted to make a name for myself and play at a higher level.

In August of 2014 I was honored to represent the United States of America in Nanjing, China for the Youth Olympics. This I believe is only the beginning for of my next journey to play at an even higher level. Playing for Stars 7s I believe can help me gain experience and also help me get closer to my dreams of playing rugby for the Eagles not in just Rio 2016, but for iRB 7s and future Olympic Games.

Jojo is currently fundraising for the Australia tour; his gofundme page to support his efforts is here.

A Word From Our Coach: More from Orene Ai'i

The last few weeks leading up to Central Coast 7s has been spent finalizing our touring plans and planning training sessions, which means I am chatting (or tweeting) daily with our coaches Andy Kotoa and Orene Ai'i. It's a testament to our players and our program that these men are working with our USA side, bringing years of international coaching and playing experience to develop players and guide them to reach their full rugby 7s potential.

I asked Orene to send in an update regarding his interest in the program - why is he keen to be a Star and return to CC7s? He'll be joining us for this tour after finishing play in Kuala Lumpur for the Agong Cup with Sabah Rugby and come time for Tobago 7s in December, he'll be joining us straight from Dubai!

Here's his update:

Hi My name is Orene Ai'i (Renz),

Really looking forward to coaching the Rugby Stars 7s at the CC7s tournament next month. I'm excited at the opportunity to coach some very keen and young players and hopefully pass on some tips to further their rugby development.

With rugby 7s being an Olympic sport now, a lot of emphasis has gone into developing the game worldwide and I feel that this opportunity to coach the Rugby Stars 7s team is a great way to give back and to develop some young prospects in the game at all levels.

Having been to the CC7s before as a player I'm looking forward to going again this time as a coach...I know how competitive this tournament is and I think it's great that more and more teams are getting involved because although everyone's there to compete and win, it's still a lot of fun That's what sets 7s rugby apart from 15s...it's a whole spectacle.

See you soon CC7s!!!

Cheers!!
Orene

Meet The Team CC7s Edition: Deven Oswiany

Deven Owsiany is one of the most recognizable and decorated names on our  Stars Rugby 7s women's roster. She's won collegiate national titles, was the MVP of the 2010 national championship, earned First Team All American recognition in 2010 and 2011, and has since kitted up for the USA Women's National Team for both 7s and 15s (check out her USA Rugby profile here).

She competed for the Eagles in the 2014 Women's Rugby World Cup in France, and is one of a few players that also donned the red, white and blue for the USA Women's 7s team that finished 3rd at the 2013 IRB Rugby World Cup Sevens  in Moscow, Russia. She additionally captained the Eagles 7s side on the 2012 iRB 7s circuit.

Deven and I had been connected via facebook where she commented on an early post from CC7s asking about this new USA women's program. Discussions developed further when I reached out to USA 7s Women's Coach Ric Suggitt regarding our roster; she was one of 4 players he immediately recommended to come on tour. Deven and I continued chatting while she was in France and worked out the logistics for her to join us on a one way ticket to Sydney - there are some higher rugby forces at work here as she'll be moving to Australia for a year for more of a rugby adventure. Our Stars family is doing their best to assist with her work and accommodations!

Here's more of her story:

How I started playing rugby- I started playing rugby my sophomore year of college at Penn State  after a previous soccer team told me that I should come check out rugby after soccer season was done. I went to a rugby practice thinking I was just going to play to stay in shape and make some new friends. After the first practice and a trip to Spain and France, I fell in love with the sport.

(editors note - Penn State is the USA's most titled women's collegiate rugby program. They have won multiple Women's Collegiate D1 National Championships and produced countless Eagles under the guidance of coaches like Pete Steinberg, Farrah Douglas, Peter Bagetta and Kate Daley)

Teams I’ve played for – Northeast Rugby Union, Keystone, MARFU All-Star, USA National 7s and 15s team

I love rugby because of the people I meet, the places I get to travel too, the camaraderie and the discipline involved to stay fit.

Why I want to play at a higher level- I love competing against the best because it pushes me to be at my best every time I train. The feeling of playing for your country and beating another country is an amazing feeling and I want that feeling more and more every time I take the pitch.

Why I’m looking forwards to Australia- I am excited about Australia because it’s going to be very competitive but I also want to make the tour very enjoyable meeting new teammates and being in a new country. I am going to be staying on in Australia after CC7’s and look forward to meeting some local people to play rugby with and enjoy my new home for a little while.

Meet The Team CC7s Edition: Chris Milledge

One of the most popular questions I get is "How do I get on the Stars?" and the basic answer is, "In any way you can, just make the effort and be responsible" as there are numerous pathways. It's been somewhat of a long running joke that I know everyone in rugby but the fact is I do a fair amount of scouting work attending regional 7s tournaments, high performance camps, the USA Rugby Club and Collegiate 7s Championships, high level competitions like Serevi Rugbytown 7s and by observing more players at the Las Vegas Invitational, CRCs, ACRA 7s, Lakefront 7s, the American Pro Rugby Training Center and more. Some players make our side via submitting playing film or through coaches recommendations.

More come to us from current Stars players that recognize talent on their club teams, their college sides, and in their opposition. I've had quite a few college coaches tell me about amazing players in their own programs and that they've seen on other teams; we do outreach to college clubs to visit campuses and watch their teams in action. I've even asked referee friends for recommendations (yes, the "dark side" is good for something)!

Our primary mission is to develop players through combining emerging talent with experienced veterans so that every player returns to their club/college a stronger rugby 7s athlete. Building our rosters is about striking the proper balance with our teams and therefore the tournaments we attend offer a mix of elite and developmental opportunities with high level competition for all involved. The secondary mission is to ensure that players that stand our in their programs but happen to live in geographic regions without access to D1, WPL, PRP or ARP programs have the chance to play, and be challenged at, a higher level. We also want our athletes to experience the amazing camaraderie of the sport of rugby - hence touring to other countries and seeking out opportunities beyond what is offered in a given region of the United States.

Cape Fear 7s Championship Game
So the nomination process is fairly open and any player interested in Stars Rugby 7s is directed to fill out our player information surveys when it comes time to build our tournament teams. Chris came to us via friends that have been a part of/seen the program at various tournaments and followed our updates via social media (click for our follow and facebook and twitter). When it came time for player nominations for our Canada, Australia and Tobago tours he submitted his information. Some follow-up with respected rugby folks from Charlotte, the South, conversations with Chris's club coach, and with those that played for and against Chris yielded high praise for his abilities and his fitness. His rugby credentials from numerous all-star sides and time spent at the Serevi Rugby developmental camp and High Performance Training Camp also boded well.

Here's his story:

"My rugby career started at the age of 17 after my family and I moved to a new neighborhood in Charlotte, NC. My neighbor across the street, PJ Anderson, was from South Africa and he knew that I had played sports all my life including football and baseball. He told me that he was starting a team at Providence Senior High School. One day he invited my family over to his house and he showed me a video clip of a rugby match he recorded to explain to me what rugby was and why I should play. At the time I had no idea what rugby was or that it was even a sport but I sat down with him and watched it trying to decipher this strange, interesting game.

#TBT
After it was over, he invited me to a rugby practice at my high school. It was the first time my school had a rugby team and he knew with my sporting background that I should at least give it a try. A few days later I went out to my first ever rugby practice with him and the team. I had no idea why I needed to wear such short shorts, or why the ball was missing laces, or why I had to keep going backwards in order to go forward but after a long two hour mud filled practice I fell in love with rugby.

That same year I started at inside center and played every game for my high school. During that same year I played 7s for a U19 team PJ started up that included players from some other local high schools in the area. I was really hooked to this seven a side game and 7s actually ignited a passion within me to play this great sport long term.

Charlotte Rugby Club 15s
After my first year of playing rugby I went to a local college and played for the Charlotte Men’s Rugby Club starting in August of 2009; at the time they were still members of the Super League and had a great coaching staff and experienced players with valuable mentoring. Transitioning from high school games to men’s rugby was an adjustment, but I learned so much in my time there and the experience was valuable to my progression as an athlete.

After the 15s season ended I returned to the U19 program to play 15s select side rugby while captaining the U19s 7s squad. We finished the 7s season undefeated against all U19 teams, had 5 trophies to our name, and competed in a men’s 7s tournament where we finished runners-up.

South Panther All-Stars with some other Stars

Since my U19 days I have been blessed to be a part of some great teams and organizations. I was accepted to Life University, I was named a Southern Rugby Conference 15s All Star, I played alongside the Charlotte 7s Elite Side that went to USA Rugby Club 7s Nationals, I was selected to the USA South U22 All Star team as well as the USA South Men’s All Star team that won the NACRA title in 2013. I was a Serevi Rugby Scholarship athlete to both the Atlanta camp and the Men’s Residency High Performance Camp. Most recently I have been honored with being selected to tour with Stars 7s Rugby.

I have also done my part to give back to the community that supported me through so many years. After I graduated high school, I registered to become a certified referee and certified USA Rugby coach. I have really enjoyed being a part of the Charlotte Junior Rugby Association the past 5 years or so. The CJRA started off as an idea from Matt Henry, a transplant from New Zealand, to improve grassroots and youth rugby here in the Charlotte area. I was one of the first coaches picked to help out and go to local elementary schools and middle schools to start before and after school programs for boys and girls rugby teams of all ages. Coaching these teams was one of the most satisfying things I have ever done; the smile and excitement the kids had about the game I love was truly inspiring and I really hope to continue coaching the youth and grassroots level. Needless to say I have been blessed to be playing a sport I love at a variety of different levels and different aspects from playing to refereeing to coaching.

Coaching with the CJRA
I am looking forward to playing in Australia with the phenomenal players and staff at Stars 7s Rugby. I have been lucky enough to play rugby across the US and the Caribbean but to play in Australia is something that I could have never imagined and a dream I have had for myself for a long time. The opportunity to play teams from the top rugby nations in the world is an exciting test I am truly looking forward to. Playing rugby in another country is one thing but experiencing a rugby culture in a different environment and making new friends and connections along the way is what I am truly looking forward to.

I started playing rugby back in 2008 and I have learned a lot since then. The biggest thing that I learned is how accepting and tight knit the rugby community and family is across the globe. No matter where you go or what your background is your rugby brothers and sisters will welcome you with open arms. I hope that I continue to be blessed with these great opportunities and improve as a rugby player. I owe a great debt to rugby and all that it has done for me and I cannot be more excited for what the future holds"

Brief Update and Coaching Announcement

It has been a huge month (and summer really) for Stars Rugby 7s. I apologize for the lack of posting, but when summer 7s comes nearly all attention turns to the pitch, to training, and to rugby travel.  There will be a big recap of all the action as we traveled between regional qualifying 7s action, the USA Rugby National Club 7s Championships in Seattle, Serevi Rugbytown 7s in Denver, and the Women's High Performance 7s Camp hosted at the American Pro Rugby Training Center in Little Rock, AR.

These past 3 months have been a whirlwind of 7s activity for many of players as well with several athletes attending Serevi residency camps, the HP7s camp in Arkansas, and others invited to week-long stints at the Olympic Training Center with the Eagles. Nearly every player competed at the club and representational levels at tournaments across the US - as well as a few abroad. And we're honored that Canada Star Nia Williams was named Women's MVP of the Club 7s National Championships, on her 21st birthday no less!

With all this action and travel, scouting and recruiting, our rosters are nearly set for Central Coast 7s in October and the reveal will include several names familiar to rugby fans in America. Our Tobago 7s invites were also released last week and I'm thrilled that nearly half the spots for 2 men's and 2 women's teams have already been taken. The growth and future of our program is bright.

And now the big news: Stars Rugby 7s has been working hard over the last few months in also developing coaches that can guide our athletes to the next level. We are thrilled to introduce Andy Katoa and Orene Ai'i as coaches for the Stars program:

 Andy Katoa
